I have only ever witnessed long lasting change arise through kindness to yourself, curiosity about what you are doing, and a willingness to act on your own behalf

I am absolutely one of those people that goes into something 100%, blinkers on, guns blazing. It doesn’t matter what it is, it can be the latest diet fad, exercise regime or fashion trend.

4 years ago I went Paleo. I jumped on that bandwagon like nobody’s business, I preached Paleo from the mountain tops to the dislike of my family and friends. I was just so excited that I found a diet that worked for me; I lost 6kgs in a few months and felt fitter and stronger than ever. I never wanted to eat grains and dairy again because I just felt sooo damn good. I immersed myself into this way of living so much that when I went out for dinner or over to a friend’s house and was served a meal that wasn’t paleo the internal dialogue and battle with my thoughts was incredibly draining.

I felt guilty for eating what they had prepared but I didn’t want to say no to eating it because it might upset them. So I would eat the ice-cream for desert and internally beat myself up because it wasn’t paleo. It was a horrible cycle of let down and guilt. It was not healthy and it sure wasn’t sustainable.

It wasn’t until I realised that I was feeling weak and tired from the pressure I was putting on myself that I started to apply the 80/20 rule to my eating habits.

Going into a healthy eating lifestyle with an 80/20 mindset is so powerful because it gives you room to move and breath. It lets you have the cake and eat it too without the judgement and fear of failing. When you get comfortable and allow yourself to be imperfect (which is perfectly, perfect by the way) you allow yourself to be human.
Going plastic-free isn’t a fad or diet like going paleo but we can apply the 80/20 rule to ensure we head down that path in a sustainable way.

Going plastic-free is such an amazing thing we can do for our own health and the health of our oceans.

I know how passionate you are about making a difference and that’s why I have put together 5 reasons why applying the 80/20 rule to plastic-free living is going to set you up for long lasting success and freedom from green guilt.

5 reasons why you should treat plastic-free living like an 80/20 diet.

1. Plastic is everywhere: It can be pretty hard to avoid all plastic so let’s get comfortable with it. When you tell yourself you are going to quit all plastic forever starting now, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. The best thing you can do is start using reusable bags, bottles and cups and straws. Here are my top 5 reusable items that I love and where you can find them.

2. Consistency not perfection: Its what you consistently do each day that impacts our planet in a positive or negative way. Just like it is consistently what you do each day that impacts your health and body. By choosing to live plastic-free 80% of the time, you are hands down conserving our oceans and you also give others permission to give it a go without the expectation of having to be perfect.

3. It will free you from green guilt: Green guilt happens when you forget your reusable bag and beat yourself up because you had to use a plastic bag. Green guilt is a huge energy vampire, it will drain you. When you focus your energy on the 20% of plastic you may use, you will inevitably feel like crap. How about you celebrate the other 80% of awesome planet saving choices you made. You’re a turtle saving legend! You’ve got this!

4. The 80/20 rule releases you from judgement: You have set the rule already that 20% of your lifestyle may involve single-use plastic and that’s cool because you have allowed yourself to do that. When you do forget your reusable cup and you have to get your coffee in a takeaway cup, ENJOY the coffee, thank the earth for its resources and remind yourself of the 80% of planet positive choices you have made.

5. Its sustainable: Going plastic-free is a lifestyle change; it takes time to integrate a lot of the necessary changes into your life. You need to be prepared, you will shop differently, the way you see the planet will change. Slow and steady wins the race and following the 80/20 rule will give you a good foundation to create a change that is sustainable.
